CLIMATE NEUTRALITY
The HERO Südtirol Dolomites is the first international cycling event in the world to have claimed climate neutrality in 2022. The goal was reached thanks to the HERO TO ZERO sustainability project, which adopted an holistic approach and implemented 20 tangible steps aiming to implement emission offsetting schemes as well as reducing the event’s CO2 emissions across three areas: the environment, society, and governance.
What does that mean?
The Organising Committee measures the CO2 emissions generated every year by the HERO Südtirol Dolomites by using the UCI Sustainability Impact Tracker and the GCI CO2 Calculator. In just a few years since implementing the HERO TO ZERO project, the results have been encouraging: in 2022, the event produced 169.66 t CO2e, while in 2024 the amount dropped by 23.7% to 129.46 t CO2e. The emissions of the 2024 race were offset with the Wind Power Karnataka project in India (GS5799), making the HERO Südtirol Dolomites carbon neutral.
Some of the most important initiatives which contributed to reducing emissions are:
- Partially replacing the helicopter for live TV broadcasting with drones, reducing its flight time and, consequently, its emissions, from 555 to 317 minutes
- Using local suppliers with a consequent reduction of emissions caused by transport
- Replacing paper communication with online communication – e.g. the HERO app and the digital HERO Times magazine
A constant commitment, knowing that each and every one of us can and should contribute towards protecting the planet.
