“The Dolomites have now been the stage of the toughest mountain bike marathon in the world for 15 years. Recognising the event’s strong ties to the local environment, the Organising Committee and HERO Südtirol Dolomites staff have been part of a seminal project since 2022 to make the event increasingly sustainable. The goal? Preserve and protect the unique beauty of the local environment and the Dolomites, a mission fitting the mountains’ status of UNESCO World Heritage Site.”
Ever since the HERO Südtirol Dolomites’ first edition, the Organising Committee has been aware and actively engaged in protecting the area’s breathtaking, natural beauty, serving as the backdrop to the race. All efforts and projects strive to maintain the area’s beauty and authenticity and pass it on to the future generations.
The HERO TO ZERO sustainability programme was launched in 2022 to realise this objective. The goal was to contribute towards protecting the Dolomites and the natural environment and meet the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to protect our planet.
The HERO Südtirol Dolomites’ commitment translates into tangible actions across the ESG spectrum. The actions focus on green transition, reducing and offsetting CO2 emissions as well as fighting waste and social inequality.
In 2022, the HERO Südtirol Dolomites signed the United Nation’s Race to ZERO, and in 2023 became a signatory of the UCI Climate Action Charter. The latter provides green guidelines for events held under the UCI umbrella, the Union Cycliste International. These steps all flow into the Committee’s strategy, whose actions are implemented during the race and on a daily basis, working towards a better and more sustainable future for everyone – in sports and everyday life.
This innovative project has already obtained significant results, including the 2024 Carbon Neutrality Certification in recognition of its CO2 offsetting project, the Wind Power Karnataka in India (GS5799).
